Official Google Blog: A new approach to China

Official Google Blog: A new approach to China

Google's Next Step

Three Cheers for Google! Google has set up a high bar--to do business with dignity and ethics. Saying "No" to China in these days is not an easy task given China's immense economic future. But in light of ethical principles (much of which corporate America has already abandoned in its pursuit of money and power) Google has made the right choice, to draw a hard line with dictatorial China in opposition to its spying on Chinese human right advocates. Even if it means Google has to pull out of China. Even if it means losing a potential giant market!!

But as a Chinese (even though I am not living in China) I am also sad if Google has to leave. It is because Google has provided the vast majority of the Chinese a viable connection with the outside world. For that, it also represents hope for many Chinese, hope for a more open and free society. Google represents every wonderful dream that one can have with new technology, every change that can be made possible. So, let me propose that Google not really leave China. With the brain power of Google I would hope that they develop internet technologies which can transcend any filter, any outside interference. That is, a web that cannot be stopped by any dictatorial power.
